「簡素」ゆえに「豊饒」　　　　　周 豪


　日本には面を付けて演じる古典舞台芸術ー「能」がある。あの能面に凝固された表情が一層表情し、あの緩慢たる所作が一層生命の律動を思わせる、その不思議さに東洋の美意識の深奥に感服すると同時に、一東洋人としての誇りを味わうものだ。

　僕にとっての絵画とは、余計な物を消し去った結果である。消し去ることで、却って豊かさを獲得することに神秘を感ずる。「簡素」ゆえに「豊饒」。目指すところは、形も色も絵の後ろから生まれて来たかのような画面、絵にした絵ではなく、絵になった絵である。

　表現としての必然性は材料によって導き出されるものである。自然さをはずさない限り、すべては「真」となる。「美」がその自然さという名の「風」に乗ってはじめて自由に舞うと思う。

“Noh”, derived from the Sino-Japanese word for “skill”or “talent”, is a major form of the classical Japanese musical drama performed since the 13th century. Many characters are masked. The masks express without words the essence of emotion of characters and slow body movements.

My works look simple since unnecessary embellishment has been removed to highlight the hidden richness of simplicity.

Also the paint and canvas used are kept close to their nature, avoiding superfluous manipulation or refinement. Thus, art can flow freely from my hands.
